Location Unit

I love teaching the location unit. There are so many engaging activities to do to talk about location. I start by teaching the location words to the tune of “Pop goes the weasel”. Since many students look at their hand to see which one makes the letter L for Left, I teach them a similar trick in Spanish by having them make a letter d with their right hand, for mano derecha.

There are also some great clips from Plaza Sésamo. In Spanish, the names are Archibaldo (Grover), la rana René (Kermit the Frog), Beto y Enrique (Bert and Ernie) and Lucas  (Cookie Monster).

Para más videos de Plaza Sésamo en español, mira los videos de MarshalArchibaldo.

We also found this commercial for Twix where they have factories for “Twix izquierdo” and “Twix derecho”.

This year we have access to iPads, so we downloaded the free app “Kids Doll House” made by Levitan Software. You can use this many ways: have them listen to a script individually and have them move the furniture around to specific rooms. They can take a screen shot (Hold Power Button and Home Button at same time) to e-mail to teacher. You can also have students make their own and describe it to a partner.

You can also use apps like “Doodle Buddy” or “Educreations” as virtual “whiteboards” to have students do drawings while they are listening to a description.

Prepositions of Location

No iPads? Check out a previous post on Using Magnets to Teach Location with several activities a a free downloadable lesson. Need plans now? No worries. Our “Prepositions of Location Unit” is ready to purchase and immediately download, which includes 9 photos with simple vocabulary that students can describe to their partner while the partner draws what is being described.

And lastly, we offer this chiste to tell your students during this unit:

Doll House iPad App

If your Foreign Language program has access to iPads, here is an app you need to check out. It is free and is fantastic to use during your Casa unit. It’s called Kids Doll House and it is made by Levitan Software. It is a very basic program, but it gets the job done. This app is such a great way to check for comprehension. Students describe to each other where the different furniture is in the house.

Because the house in the app does not have specific identifiable rooms such as kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc., students must listen to the description of the location of the room in order to place los muebles in their right place. Such an engaging and hands-on activity for students to practice house vocabulary and prepositions!

Place the furniture in the correct location

Certainly you can have students put furniture in the house and have them describe the house they created to their partners. But some students may need some good scaffolding to get to this level.

That’s why, for our own class, we created scripts for the students to read to their partners. It gives them the opportunity to read (and their partner to hear) correctly stated sentences. It’s available for purchase and saves you the time from having to create your own. Such a time saver. Check it out here.

One students read a script while another student work on the iPad.

Be sure to subscribe to this blog to receive updates when we make a new post, including new posts on ways to incorporate using iPads in the Spanish classroom.

  • El Corte Ingles Webquest: Have your students navigate through the Spanish Spanish Ropa Vocabdepartment store, El Corte Ingles, while discovering the meaning of clothing vocabulary words on their own. Very motivating and engaging lesson. For instructions and a pre-made handout, purchase our webquest on TpT. Can even have students “purchase” an outfit on a pretend budget of Euros.
  • Roleplaying Cards: Have your students act out in groups of 3 as the salesclerk, customer, and friend. Use these roleplaying cards and shopping cards as prompts. Spanish Task Cards
  • Use engaging and real pictures of clothes. Don’t use clipart. Grab pictures of Cuanto Cuestasweatshirts of their favorite sports teams, t-shirts of their favorite bands to engage them. Download our free powerpoint of partner oral activities to describe clothing and talk about costs.
  • Use popular teenage magazines and have the students discuss what their favorite celebrities are wearing. No kid wants to talk about a clipart picture of José and María from a textbook. That’s not real life. Borrow a magazine from your school library. You can use post-it page markers to add prices and students can even make comparisons. Or even have student’s explore online version of teen magazines, (which we have linked here) and check out the ‘moda’ section.
    Spanish Fashion Moda Unit
  • You might even find interesting articles such as “Así son según su estilo de camiseta” which describes a guy’s personality based on his choice of t-shirt. Totally authentic resource!

Chistes

  • Did I ever tell you about the time I went traveling with my friend who only packed 2 weeks worth of clothes? We started in Poland, then went through Germany, Italy, and France. By the time we made it to Spain, he didn’t have any socks left. I said to him “It’s ok, amigo. You’re at the end of Europa“.
  • What did the most famous cotton grower say on his deathbed?algodon in historyAlgodón in History!
  • What movie is about a man who hears a voice telling him to build a skirt store?
    Falda Dreams!
  • What song was about a colorful hat from the Spanish version of Wizard of Oz?
    Sombrero-ver the rainbow!
  • See more jokes for your Spanish class on our chistes page.

Assessment

  • Rather than a traditional grammar-based test, use a proficiency-based test where students must produce real language. Have them produce language that they would actually use in a given scenario dealing with clothing. For example, I took the roleplay scenario from above and used that as a basis for their assessment. They had to create the dialogue between those three people.

Using Memes in Spanish

$

What’s the most important thing in a foreign language class? To give students comprehensible input and show them the language in context. When you can accomplish this and entertain the kids at the same time to keep their interest, you’ve got yourself a win-win situation. During the Food Unit, we decided to google image search some vocabulary words/terms and we found some delicious memes.

Google Image Search is such an easy way to show students differening vocabulary. Want to compare the word “tortilla” in Mexico and in Spain? Google Image Search “Tortilla” and “Tortilla española”. The students can clearly see the difference directly from the pictures. Can same comparisons with “torta” and “torta de chocolate”

Re Pin This Post

Anyway, we found some great memes incorporating the phrases “Tengo hambre” and “Estoy lleno”.

tengo hambreestoy llenoWe’ve compiled 9 of our favorites in a powerpoint which we went over with the students in class. You can download this free ppt file by clicking the image below:

A fellow blogger, English teacher Tracee Orman of Hunger Games Lessons, gave us this MemeActivityForStudentsgreat idea of having students create their own memes. This gets students thinking about their vocabulary and applying it to situations. You can have your students use a meme generator such as ImgFlip, MemeCrunchDIY LOL, and this site has memes created in Spanish, but some of the language/themes may not be suitable for student viewing. Others popular generators, which were blocked at my school, were Meme Generator, and Make Me a Meme.

*Please note that some of these sites contain images that are not school appropriate, so please preview before suggesting to students.

An idea might be to save to certain suitable images to a student server and allow the students to select from those images. They can either add text through a simply image ediing software or copy the image into Microsoft Word and create a textbook, changing the layout of the textbox to “in front of text” so they can move it to a designated position over the picture.

Contest:

Feeling creative? We’d like to encourage you to create your own meme to use in your classroom and share that image with us! Need further incentive? Ok, let’s make a contest out of this. We’ll collect submissions starting now until the start of our Spring Break, March 22. We will post all submissions and the top 5 will win 10 Spanish Postcards! First prize winner will get the 10 Postcards, plus 3 Posters! Please e-mail your meme to spanishplans@gmail.com and we will post submissions after March 22.*

On of my favorite units is teaching the Food Unit. I love sharing the unique flavors of Latin Comida Autentica PowerpointAmerica with my students. During the beginning of the unit, I have a “Comida del día” that I have described on the powerpoint along with their daily bellringer questions. We discuss the food and its origin.

Hispanic Comida Bulletin BoardTo help students identify these foods and create a lasting impressions I recently created a Bulletin Board of Authentic Hispanic Foods including Pictures and Labels. Each are only $1.00 and ready to print or use immediately in class.

Comida Bulletin Board

In another section of the room, I took this document (which you can download for free) and enlarged it on our school’s poster maker. As we talked about the foods, many students were eager to try these foods or had already tried them. The students would write their name under that item and write a smiley face if they liked it or frowny face if they didn’t.

Yo he probado firme si has probado
Me Gusta No me gusta

  • I also have students draw a monster that is described to them. The first day, I give the descriptions and use bodies that are made up of past vocabulary words like Cuerpo Unitschool supplies and food. So it might have a fork for an arm and a ruler as a leg. The second day students describe an alien/monster to their partner and their partner has to draw it. I have students face their partner (one partner facing the board, their partner across from them with their back to the board) and I project one picture on the board. Once the partner is done describing it, the other partner can look at the picture and see how they compare. I tell my students to describe the big picture, not minor details if they don’t have the language for it.
To make sure they stay in the target language, I love this idea of giving them a strip of paper with percentages of 10. If I hear them speak English, they lose a letter grade (10%). Most students are motivated to speak in Spanish because they enjoy the activity but some might need an extra motivation not to speak ANY English at all.

Commands

We recently worked on commands in Spanish 1 in our giving advice unit. One way I grabbed attention is by creating a powerpoint slide with pictures of myself and then creating 2 other versions. I then typed in some “advice” that my “teacher-conscience” would make.

Here’s a version with the Teacher Meme character:
Spanish Teacher Mandatos
I took a regular picture of myself for the normal picture and picture with a grumpy face and a picture with an innocent looking face. I then used the powerpoint “Shapes” to create a halo and red triangles for horns. Or if you are tech savy, you can insert a transparent picture of thorns. With the speech bubbles (available in the ‘shapes’ options) I made the dialogue with the advice.

For an assignment/assessment, I tasked students with creating their own struggle of conscience between good and evil by using a character and giving commands relevant to that character.
Here are some samples:bueno contra malo Mandatos de BobEsponja

If you are interested in the template for the teacher created pictures, I have included this template (with the speech bubbles, halo, and thorns already there, all you have to do is insert 3 pictures of yourself) in this Project available on TeachersPayTeachers.

One of our goals this year will be to engage students via their own personal interests. At the beginning of the year we will give students a survey to gauge their interests in a variety of topics including sports, tv, music, and celebrities. From that point we will be using revista tu portada de Justinauthentic resources to allow our students access to the language in these high interest topics.

Last year we mentioned websites of several teen magazines in Spanish. And during our recent travels we were able to purchase some of these magazines. Some of them contained some very useful back to school articles. Below are some articles talking about back to school.
